CREATING A CT FAMILY COURT REFORM MOVEMENT THAT EVERYONE CAN GET BEHIND!

Recently, we all watched the fiasco of SB #1049 go down where rogue leaders of the CT Coalition for Family Court Reform tried to slip a bill through the Finance Committee rather than the Judiciary Committee.  They did this after members of the Judiciary Committee quite sensibly refused to hear proposed bills from The Coalition that were destructive and damaging to women.

The only thing I can say about the Finance Committee at this point is: "What were they thinking?"

PERMANENT COMMISSION ON STATUS OF WOMEN IN CT IDENTIFIES PATTERN OF GENDER DISCRIMINATION AGAINST WOMEN: SEX WORKERS MORE THAN TWICE AS LIKELY TO BE ARRESTED THAN BUYERS OF SEX!

FEROZE DHANOA OF THE AVON PATCH REPORTS AS FOLLOWS:
"Sex workers in Connecticut are more than twice as likely as buyers of sex to be arrested, according to an analysis conducted by the Permanent Commission on the Status of Women (PCSW).
The organization reports that the pattern of arrests and convictions for prostitution in nearly every Connecticut municipality may indicate the presence of systemic sexism in how sex workers are viewed and treated. The analysis is based on an annual report released by the Trafficking in Persons Council (TIPC).
Data for the past decade shows 1,841 prostitution convictions versus 269 convictions for buying sex. When it comes to arrests, 3,557 prostitutes were arrested compared to 1,378 buyers of sex over the past ten years, according to the PCSW. While the data is not broken down by gender, the PCSW says it can be safely assumed that most prostitutes are women..."

SALON WRITER BROOKE ARNOLD TALKS ABOUT OPPRESSION OF WOMEN IN CHRISTIAN CHURCH; IT'S A STANDARD PRACTICE!

Brooke Arnold of "Salon" writes as follows:
"I think if I had known the amount of attention and the intensity of response that my last article for Salon, I could’ve been a Duggar wife: I grew up in the same church, and the abuse scandal doesn’t shock me,” was going to receive, I would not have had the courage to press “send” on the pitch. I assumed that it would be just one more article; one more pebble thrown into the giant ocean of online media. I didn’t imagine that it would cause anything more than a very short-lived ripple. I was very wrong.
Since the article was published, I have received thousands of messages from people who have said: “I thought I was the only one.”
Many of those messages came from people like me who grew up in and around ATI, a fundamentalist Christian organization— some even from people that I had grown up with and not spoken to in a very long time. Sadly, many of those messages also included stories of horrors that far exceeded anything that I experienced..."

HUFF POST REPORTS ON MAJOR WAGE GAP BETWEEN MOTHERS AND FATHERS!

The wage gap between men and women in the U.S. has been the subject of many articles and speeches of late. Less frequently discussed is the difference in pay for mothers and fathers.
Using data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey, the National Women’s Law Center put together this map, which breaks down the wage gap from state to state.

NPO REPORTS FATHERS MUCH MORE LIKELY TO BE JAILED FOR NON-PAYMENT OF CHILD SUPPORT THAN MOTHERS!

Attorney Robert Franklin of the National Parents Organization reports as follows:
"Two years ago, the National Parents Organization’s Ned Holstein reported the shocking news that, in Massachusetts, non-custodial fathers who are behind on their child support payments are eight times as likely to be sent to jail as non-custodial mothers in arrears. That information came to NPO courtesy of the yeoman work of Terry Brennan who dogged the sheriff’s departments of all Bay State counties for their data on child support enforcement. The results were astonishing: between 95% and 98.5% of those incarcerated in every county were fathers.
U.S. Census Bureau figures on child support payment demonstrate that mothers with child support arrears are incarcerated at approximately one-eighth of the rate that would be justified by their numbers if fathers and mothers in arrears were treated equally. Mothers in arrears are incarcerated at lower rates even though they have higher rates of incomplete payment, pay a smaller percentage of their child support order, and have larger arrears than fathers. In the absence of other explanations, these data suggest that gender bias against fathers plays a large role in family court-ordered incarcerations..."
