I just recall with my abuser how he would come home and call me and say "I have a present for you!" and I would get excited thinking finally he is giving something to me. But it turned out that the present was actually for him. He was unable to differentiate between a present for him and a present for me. To him, a present to him was also one to me. Needless to say I never received a present specifically for me. Does that make sense?
