THE CASE FLOW COORDINATOR

Who is the Queen of Family Court?  The answer is:  Ms Jeanne Hayes, the Case Flow Coordinator.

Whenever you have a hearing in Court, where do you head?  Towards the Case Flow Coordinator's office.

Sometimes, you aren't doing it for any particular reason, you are just going there because that's where all the lawyers go just before a hearing.  They go there and stand around.  Some of this is because the mediation offices are right there, and everyone has to sign up for mediation.

But otherwise, if there is anything going on in your case, any last minute changes or news, the Case Flow Coordinator will know about it.  So when I arrive at Court for any important matter, I always check in with Ms. Hayes and show my face so that if there is anything going on, she can let me know.  Usually, when you do that you bump into the opposing attorney who is doing the exact same thing.

Also, it is important to check in with Ms. Hayes regarding which courtroom your hearing be held in.  She always knows.

Ms. Hayes is a very professional person who treats everyone equally and with respect.  Usually when you come to see her, you'll find lawyers sitting on her chairs and chatting with her, although she keeps her focus on her work and maintains a respectful distance from them.  She is cool, crisp, fair and professional, and what is more, she has these marvelous mint life savers on her desk which are great to freshen your mouth up with before a hearing.

One of the most important jobs that Ms. Hayes does is schedule all the hearings and receive all the documents that are required for trial known as trial compliances.  Any communication with the judge goes through Ms. Jeanne Hayes; she kind of acts as a gatekeeper in that respect--that means requests for continuances because of health reasons or other court conflicts.

There are other nice little tidbits the case flow coordinator can throw your way, how soon you need to get a document in, or whether a motion has yet been ruled upon.  There is something about checking in with her occasionally that makes you feel more as if you are in the loop.

By the way, if you were wondering, I was told it used to be that lawyers would give case flow coordinators like Ms. Hayes gifts and try to sway them to their advantage.  However, that is absolutely not allowed any more, so make no attempts to add anything extra to Ms. Hayes collection of lifesavers or else you could get into trouble!
